Recently Discovered Bacteria Name Inspired by Pokemon

Who is that pokemon bacteria

Pokemon has grown from it's humble beginnings to become popular with people from all over the world with all kinds of all different backgrounds. With the Pokemon series celebrating its 25th anniversary, Nintendo has highlighted this fact numerous times detailing the extensive history of the franchise. Rich to poor, kids to adults and people of all different educational backgrounds; including research teams studying disease causing microorganisms.

A research team working under Professor Michael Bonkowski at the University of Cologne Institute of Zoology in Germany has discovered a new group of bacterium. Of the 18 bacteria samples the team studied, three were found to new bacteria. Of those, it named two of them after different species of Pokemon.
The researchers gave their new bacterium the genus name "Pokemonas," and their species names are abra and kadabra. Thus their full names are “Ca. Pokemonas kadabra” and “Ca. Pokemonas abra,” after the Pokemon Abra and Kadabra. The researchers gave the bacteria those names as a reference to where they were found: within Thecofilosea amoebae, which are ball-shaped. Thus the researchers found the new bacteria to be kind of like Pokemon in their Pokeballs.
The researchers found these bacterium while researching bacteria of the order Legionellales. These bacteria are interesting interesting to scientists because they cause lung disease in humans, including Legionnaires' disease, which is caused by the species Legionella pneumophila, and can be deadly. It's unclear if “Ca. Pokemonas kadabra” or “Ca. Pokemonas abra” can cause disease in humans, but the researchers haven't ruled it out yet.

Video games have been used in scientific studies before, such as using them to understand how pigs learn. Naming new discoveries like this is a fun way to get people into science and learning more about nature. And it isn't the first time a scientist has named one of their discoveries after a Pokemon. There is also the protein named Pikachurin, after the Pokemon Pikachu, and the dinosaur named Aerodactylus, appropriately named after the fossil Pokemon Aerodactyl. Of course, there are also the beetles which were named after the legendary bird Pokemon: Binburrum articuno, Binburrum zapdos, and Binburrum moltres, named after Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres.

On the other hand, this could be seen as making light of a fairly serious scientific topic. Especially since “Ca. Pokemonas kadabra” and “Ca. Pokemonas abra” might be able to cause disease in humans. Even if Abra and Kadabra aren't some of the best designed Pokemon, Nintendo especially might not enjoy having two of their popular critters to be associated with a potentially fatal lung disease.
