What is Apples live Spring Loaded 2021 and how can you watch it?

In its latest online-only event Apple is expected to introduce new iPads (with updated screens), iMacs and the elusive AirTags. The event will take place today, April 20 at 10am PT (1pm ET).

The live stream will be held on Apple's website, while showing off new devices as part of its all-digital announcement strategy amid the coronavirus pandemic. These virtual online events have permitted Apple to stick to its initial schedule of holding events in the spring, summer and fall.

Virtual invite

Apple sent out an email invite to reporters which shows an Apple logo rendered as a squiggle, a seeming reference to the iPad's popular Apple Pencil. The invitation then arrived a few hours later after Siri leaked the event before the official announcement. Close-watching Apple observers noticed that if you asked Siri when the next Apple event was, it responded: "The special event is on Tuesday, April 20, at Apple Park in Cupertino, CA. You can get all the details on Apple.com." Later on that morning, Siri only told people that the details about Apple events are on its website.

The upcoming spring announcements are rumored to focus on the iPad's speed and its screens. Apple was expected to upgrade its iPads by introducing a new screen technology called mini-LED which shows improved efficiency and better lighting.

Alongside the iPads, Apple's expected to announce its plans to deliver iOS 14.5, a major software update that offers new emoji, ways to unlock a phone with your Apple Watch instead of your face, and big privacy changes. The new software is set to be available as a free download, that (with the permission of users) will track and collect information about user across different apps and websites.

The longstanding feud between Apple and Facebook continues as Facebook criticized the new initiative called App Tracking Transparency, predicting that it will increase advertising costs.
