Road Safety Rules and Traffic Signs

Regardless of being a motorist, cyclist, or pedestrian, it’s crucial to understand the various traffic rules and road signs. The primary purpose of road signs and traffic rules is to keep everyone safe on the road. This means that all parties must learn how to coordinate on the road concerning speed and direction.

In Australia, people can start driving from the age of 16, and there are rules to be followed before you are allowed on the road. This doesn’t happen in Australia alone but also in other countries. You must go for diving lessons, pass a driver’s test and obtain a driving license. The only significant difference with driving in Australia is that driving is on the left.

There are many types of road safety signs that communicate different messages depending on where it’s placed. They are classified into four main categories as follows:

Regulatory signs

Regulatory signs are also known as mandatory signs, and they must be followed. Examples of these road safety signs include; stop, speed limit, give way, no left/right turn, and many more. 

Warning/ cautionary Signs

These signs warn drivers about what’s coming ahead so they can adjust their lanes, use another route, reduce their speed, and much more. Examples of these signs include; the narrow road ahead, slippery road, sharp bend or curve, and much more. 

Informative signs

These are signs that give the driver important information while on the road. They do not necessarily impact their driving, but they are helpful to the driver. Examples of such signs include; school ahead, a hospital nearby, and other signs that provide direction. 

Temporary signs

Have you ever seen a warning sign about road construction or closed lanes? Those are some common examples of temporary road signs. They are usually on the road for a short time until things go back to normal on the road.

Importance of road safety signs

Traffic signs help to prevent and reduce accidents on the road. They represent the rules and regulations set for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians on the road. When people obey traffic signs, it helps to maintain order hence reducing the rate of accidents. In most countries, road signs are in the form of images and not words.

This is because images are easier to comprehend for most people, including foreigners. Traffic signs are usually large with bright colors that can be spotted from a distance. When drivers notice road signs early, they can take the necessary action in good time and avoid unnecessary fines and inconveniencing other drivers.

Common road safety rules

• You and your passengers must put on your seatbelts at all times. Infants and children at the back in a car seat secured by a harness. Children with medical conditions can be sitting in the front seat properly restrained.
• Drunk driving is illegal.
• Cyclists and bikers must wear a helmet, reflector, and any other appropriate gear.
• Using your phone while driving is not allowed
• You must have a valid driving license.

The above common road safety rules and regulations are standard in several countries. However, licensing rules might differ for foreigners.
