Oscars 2021: How and where to watch this years favourites and best nominated movies

As the world prepares to watch yet another pandemic-ridden Oscars 2021 ceremony, the 93rd Academy Awards surprised us with exceptionally diverse nominees which we can't seem to get enough of. From the Sound of Metal to Promising Young Woman, there are some powerful films that are competing for the prestigious best picture award. With the awards ceremony taking place on April 25, that leaves us with two weeks to take a look at what the fuss is all about.

Where to watch this year's Oscar nominated films

With box offices shut, the only way we can indulge in these cinematic experiences is online via streaming services, so here's how you can watch the creme de la creme of the movie world. Amazon Prime, Netflix, Youtube, Vudu, Hulu and Apple TV are some of the streaming services.

  • Judas and the Black Messiah

You can now watch "Judas and the Black Messiah" online on Amazon Prime, Vudu, and Fandango Now for 19.99 dollars.

Directed and produced by Shaka Kind, Judas and the Black Messiah is an American biographical drama film about the betrayal and assassination of Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya) by FBI informant William O'Neal (Lakeith Stanfield). Both actors were nominated for Oscars for their roles.

  • Minari

You can watch "Minari" in theatres (once you're allowed to) or purchase a digital rental through Amazon Prime, Google Play, Vudu, Redbox, and Direct TV. Costs range from 18 to 20 dollars.

Lee Isaac Chung's Minari narrates the story of a Korean-American family that moves to a small Arkansas farm to pursue their American Dream during Ronald Reagan's America. As they adapt to life in the Ozarks, the family's grandmother comes to town. The film is loosely based on Chung's real-life childhood and experiences growing up on a farm with immigrant parents.

  • Nomadland

"Nomadland" is available to stream for all Hulu subscribers for 5.99 dollars per month or Amazon Prime Video subscribers can pay 14.99 dollars to buy the film. The movie is also available for 14.99 dollars on YouTube, the Google Play store and Vudu.

Filmmaker Chloé Zhao brings an emotional drama starring actress Frances McDormand, is inspired by the 2017 book by Jessica Bruder. It follows the journey of a houseless woman travelling around the American West after losing everything during the recession. On her journey, she finds peace and a sense of community. Zhao made history as the first woman of colour nominated for best director and for being the most nominated woman in a single year.

  • The Father

You can rent "The Father" digitally on Amazon Prime for 19.99 dollars.

The Father, starring Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Coleman, follows Hopkins' character, also Anthony, who is a lonely man stricken by dementia and rejects the caregivers arranged for him by his daughter Anne, played by Coleman. Yet help is also becoming a necessity for Anne; she can't make daily visits anymore and Anthony's grip on reality is unravelling.

  • Mank

"Mank" is a Netflix film, so you'll only find it on Netflix. The drama is available exclusively on the streaming service, and it's available to watch right now.

Mank is a black-and-white drama about the making of "Citizen Kane" and how it came to be. The movie takes place in 1930s Hollywood through the eyes of screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz when he fights to finish his work on Citizen Kane

The Trial of the Chicago 7

"The Trial of the Chicago 7" can be streamed on Netflix. Paramount sold its 1960s courtroom drama to the streaming service after the pandemic hit, sending it to instant streaming on the platform instead of movie theatres.

The story of seven people on trial stemming from various charges surrounding the uprising at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois. The trial transfixed the nation and sparked a conversation about mayhem intended to undermine the U.S. government.

  • Promising Young Woman

You can watch "Promising Young Woman", on digital platforms and is available to rent for 5.99 dollars and is playing at select theatres.

Promising young woman is a revenge comedy thriller in which Cassie (Carey Mulligan) leads a secret double life. An unexpected encounter in her life gives her the opportunity to avenge a friend that was sexually assaulted. The film spurs conversations about sexism in Hollywood and female empowerment on screen.

  • Sound of Metal

You can watch "Sound of Metal" on Amazon Prime Video only via subscription or on Google Play for just under five dollars.

Riz Ahmed embodies the character of a young heavy-metal drummer in Sound of Metal who learns, 15 minutes into the film, that he's losing his hearing, fast and his world starts to crumble. Critics have described the film as a "gem you'll want to bang the drum for".
