It follows the journey of a houseless woman travelling around the American West after losing everything during the recession. On her journey, she finds peace and a sense of community. Zhao made history as the first woman of colour nominated for best director and for being the most nominated woman in a single year.

The Father, starring Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Coleman, follows Hopkins' character, also Anthony, who is a lonely man stricken by dementia and rejects the caregivers arranged for him by his daughter Anne, played by Coleman.
