7 Tips to Take Care of Your Eyes with Contacts

Fashion trends come and go like even before you can decide on one, it’s already gone. When it comes to eyes, it takes in everything including eye makeups, lashes extensions, designer eyewear and what not? Contact lenses have also been a staple of the timeless fashion trend.

Contact lenses- A style statement

Whether you use them for vision correction or you just love ocean blue eyes, contact lenses have remained an undying fashion trend. Although ‘contacts VS specs’ is a never-ending debate, contact lenses are a preferable choice by many. Contact lenses give you visual freedom and of course, they are a style statement.

A few years ago, when I was diagnosed with nearsightedness, I went to the best eye specialist in Rawalpindi. I was always fond of wearing contacts but I was advised to use specs instead. Now, when I have been using specs for a long time, there are a few things I would love to share with you.

Tips for contact wearers

So, if you are also a first-time contact wearer, this article is for you!

1- Cleaning is the key!

Lenses are low-maintenance visual accessories, so anyone can easily forget about them. But remember that the only way you can have a healthy relationship with your contacts is by regularly cleaning them. You can use a good contact solution that can help you to disinfect and clean your contacts rather than using a saline solution.

2- Don’t mess up the schedule

Just like toddlers, your lenses need a proper maintenance schedule to work well. Turning off their schedule will result in discomfort while wearing them and compromised visual insight. Depending upon your usage or lifestyle, your physician can suggest a workable contact schedule and mess up with this schedule will end up with irritated eyes.

3- Taking off your contacts while sleeping

You are tired as hell and you immediately head to your bed, but wait! Are you wearing contacts? Just take a second and take them off before you nod off. 

Sleeping with your lenses will result in drier eyes and can increase the risk of eye infection. Talking about your lenses, they need to relax too, just give them a break and let them bathe in the disinfectant solution.

4- Care for your lens isn’t enough! What about the case?

Every night you take off your lenses and put them in the case until the next day, and the cycle goes on. Your case continuously stays wet and makes a breeding ground for bacteria. Bacteria can reside in the grooves of your lens case and can be potentially damaging for your eyes. So, choosing a plain case, rinsing and cleaning case time to time can prevent a grimy case.

5- Avoid unnecessarily touching your eyes

Once you wear contact lenses, let them be there. But I can understand if you have to focus on the screen for longer periods of time or you are suffering from allergies, this will surely make you rub your eyes. But touching your eyes can make you spread the allergens and can result in corneal abrasions.

Once my physician at Al Shifa Trust Eye Hospital, shared a similar incident where a patient was wearing her contacts with an eye infection and ended up spreading the infection.

6- Help your contacts for a better vision

Whether they are the vision correctors or you wear them for fashion purposes, you are exposing them for nearly everything. Here are a few things that can help you to aid your vision buddies;

• When you are wearing your contacts, try to blink more often to lubricate your eyes

• If you have to spend hours on screen, do follow 20-20-20 rule (take a 20-sec screen break from the screen after every 20 min to look at a 20 ft distant object)

• Use artificial tear more often  

• To avoid your contacts from building a film on them, make sure you close your eyes while spraying room freshener, perfume, etc.

• Carefully choose and apply makeup products

7- Don’t forget your eye exams

Other than all these measures, one thing you should never forget is your eye exam. Frequently visiting your doctor can be a useful tip for a healthy vision.

Irrespective of why you are using contacts, make sure you take care of them properly. As your healthy contacts mean healthy eyes!
