Pay attention to information presented in questions

Your strategies for performing well on college exams will make a difference not only in how you perform on the exam, but can shed some insight on how to do well in your courses overall. Without doubt, your strategies for taking multiple choice exams will differ from other types of exams, but by knowing these strategies and putting them into practice will help demonstrate your knowledge and help with a final grade.

Be Prepared

As any instructor will tell, as well as other successful students, you should always arrive to an exam as prepared as possible. This counts for materials (pens, pencils, calculators, etc), being well rested and getting your frame of mind in the right place by eating well prior to the exam. There's little value in "cramming" directly before the exam and it might be best if you breath deeply and relax in the minutes prior to the start of the exam.

Time Management

A strategy to keep in mind, but not to always rely on, is that college professors will structure a multiple choice exam by using the same answer letter for successive questions. You should know this ahead of time so as to not feel the pangs of nervousness if you have a handful of answers reflecting the same letter answer, creating an atmosphere where you'll feel nervous and anxious. Another strategy is to take all of the answers and insert them into the question so as to help negate certain answer letters and give you a smaller pool of answers from which to choose from.

In the event that you find yourself completely at a loss for an answer, try to narrow the choice to the answer is correct in all cases and not "some of the time" or dependent on other variables.

If you can at least narrow your choices to two solid, trustworthy answers, you should assume that your intuition will help you choose more right answers than not, but there are exceptions.

True / False Exam Questions


Knowing the basis of "logic" will help you answer questions you don't readily know when faced with True/False statements. You have to keep in mind that for the statement to be true, the answer you choose has to be true ALL OF THE TIME. Again, in "logic" of test exam questions like these, if any part of the statement is false, then the answer cannot result in a TRUE. This may be where you have to do some "self-talking" and read the question in your mind a handful of times and reword it if possible to make sure the answer remains either true or false in each situation you can think of in a reasonable amount of time.

Short Answer Test Questions

On short answer questions the teachers are usually looking for a foundational knowledge of the material that is factual. Students should focus on the keywords and ideas and eliminate information that doesn't directly answer the question. Answers should be concise and short. If you are unsure of the answer make an educated guess that could get you more points than leaving the question completely blank.

If you don't know the answer to the question, then come back to it at the end of the test. Other questions may give you the information you need to complete this one. If you have more than one answer ask the instructor what they suggest.

Most examiners are looking for the test taker's base knowledge of the subject and to be at least familiar with the ideas that are being taught and tested. By keeping your answers shorter and more concise, you'll be able to drive more focus on the idea rather than "shoot in the dark" and confuse too many ideas into one answer. Besides, the multiple ideas you're presenting may end up being a later question and you'll be able to save your test taking ammo for later.

While these are test taking tips, they should never replace studying, practicing and knowing the information through solid preparation.
