Nursing aides wishing to work in Medicare and Medicaid participating facilities in the state must be certified with CNA Certification in Hawaii. No person can perform nursing and nursing aide-related tasks in the state if he/she is not certified by the HI Department of Human Services.
HI CNA Certification Requirements
The requirements to be certified for working in HI Medicare and Medicaid certified facilities consist of:
Enrol and successfully complete the director of the department of human services approved Nurse Aide Training Program (NATP). If the nursing assistants do not complete the training program, they will not be permitted to sit for the state CNA Certification Test.
Successfully complete the state-approved competency evaluation program (CEP) consisting of a Written (or Oral) Test, and a Skills Test with a score of at least seventy-five (75) percent. The skills performance test consists of five (5) randomly selected skills obtained from a pool of skills performed by a nursing assistant during the skills training of NATP.
As of August 1, 2012, the HI Department of Human has contracted the services of the nationally recognized testing vendor Prometric to schedule and administer the CNA exam in the selected Regional Test sites. The applicants must send all Applications for scheduling the Exam directly to Prometric
The successful completion of Nurse Aide Training and Competency Evaluation Program allows nursing assistants to be certified with CNA Certification in Hawaii and listing on the State Nurse Aide Registry.
Re-certification Maintenance Requirements
CNA Certification in Hawaii is valid for twenty-four months and needs renewing biennially. The applicants must submit the Application for re-certification one month before the certificate expires. The re-certification requirements include:
Complete the Annual performance review
Perform regular in-service training
Submit the Re-certification Application 30 days before the certificate expires.
Complete nursing and nursing-related direct care services of one full day for compensation.
CNAs failing to complete re-certification requirements, or fail to renew their license before the expiration will have to meet the certification requirements again to be eligible to work in the certified facilities.
