Earning A CompTIA Certification

Getting a CompTIA certification is an ideal way to both enter and advance a career in IT. These vendor-neutral certifications demonstrate that you have the skills needed to do the job regardless of the vendor. The certifications are available in many specific areas of IT, and many of the certifications serve as a prerequisite for more advanced vendor certifications. There are so many different certifications, and it can be difficult to choose the one that suits your needs and expectations. That being said, it's best to choose a certification according to skill level.

For students or workers new to IT, the Strata IT Fundamentals and IT for Sales certifications are ideal. The Strata IT Fundamentals certification ensures competency in personal computer components, compatibility, functionality and related technology topics. The exam covers the topics of security risks, software installation, computer hardware basics and the knowledge of preventative maintenance of computers. Candidate job roles in information technology environments may include sales engineer, entry level customer support, account manager or sales associate.

The A+ and PDI+ certifications are appropriate for those starting an IT career. The A+ certification covers all topics in installation, networking, security, preventative maintenance and troubleshooting. There are two exams for this certification and 500 hours of hands-on experience in the field or lab. Possible jobs in the IT field include field service technician, IT support specialist and IT support technician. Many companies like Dell, Ricoh, Cisco, Lenovo and Intel require A+ certification for service technicians. In addition, the Department of Homeland Security requires it as part of its computer forensics program.

The Network+, Security+, Linux+, Server+, CTP+, Project+ and Green IT certifications are for professional and established IT workers. The Network+ certification is the mark of a qualified networking professional. The certification ensures strong knowledge in security, topologies, network technologies, installation and configuration. Jobs typically include high levels in network technician positions, network installing, IT cable installing and network administration. Companies like Xerox, Sharp and Dell require this certification for networking technicians. It is also a recognized certification by the U.S. Department of Defense.

The Security+ certification designates the IT worker as a knowledgeable professional in the field of security. The field of security is one of the fasting growing fields in IT, and it is an excellent certification to have. This international certification ensures competency in identity management, host security, threats, operational security, network security and cryptography. The course not only prepares IT workers for procedures during security threats, it prepares the IT worker on how to prevent threats. General job positions include network administrator, security engineer, security specialist and information assurance technician. Typical companies that employ IT workers with this certification include Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, U.S. State Department and Hitachi.

The Server+ certification validates knowledge of technology, server issues and disaster recovery. It demonstrates high knowledge of both software and hardware. The exam covers troubleshooting, storage, system hardware, IT environment, software and disaster recovery. It is an international certification for professionals with at least 18 to 24 months of experience in the field. Although A+ certification is not a prerequisite, the certification is strongly encouraged for those seeking Server+ certification. Future job positions include systems engineer, web site administrator, network administrator and security analyst. Dell, Intel, Xerox and Lenovo require this certification for server technicians.

In the world of IT, a CompTIA certification is a way to establish one as a professional. It is always recommended to have as many certifications as possible for advancement.
