Does CompTIA Build Vendor-Neutral Certifications That Measure Foundation Skills?

The Computer Technology Industry Association (CompTIA), established 30 years ago, is a trade association of over 2,000 IT businesses and members across the world. It has offices in the USA, the UK, India, Japan, and South Africa. It supports major training, education and advocacy initiatives, and runs a foundation to help people in disadvantaged populations gain skills in IT to help them gain employment.

One of the aims of CompTIA is to promote the professionalism of IT staff. It does this through accredited training specialists and certification programmes. Training providers are reviewed and approved by CompTIA through the CompTIA Authorized Partner Program which aims to provide high-quality exam preparation. The skills and knowledge measured by the various examinations are derived from cross-industry global surveys conducted by CompTIA which are fed into the examination and training course development cycle.

This is a list of some of the existing certifications provided by CompTIA (there are many others):

· CompTIA A+

· CompTIA Cloud+

· CompTIA Linux+ (Powered by LPI)

· CompTIA Mobile App Security+

· CompTIA Mobility+

· CompTIA Network+

· CompTIA Project+

· CompTIA Security+

· CompTIA Server+

Because CompTIA is made up of so many different members from across the IT world, it has set out to make each of its qualifications independent of any specific vendor's products (vendor neutral). For example, the CompTIA Linux+ certificate covers Linux in general rather than just one distribution, such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux. (You can, of course, receive training specific to Red Hat Linux from Red Hat and a number of other authorised training companies.)

The lowest level CompTIA qualification is CompTIA A+. This certification is aimed at people starting out in an IT career, and is a way of validating their basic IT skills. Whilst there are no prerequisites to taking the course and exam, it is recommended that participants have some understanding of PCs before they sign up to the course. Major companies such as Dell and Intel recognise CompTIA A+ certification as a valuable qualification, and require their field service staff to be certified in it.

The CompTIA+ training course covers such things as: basic PC and laptop hardware functions and upgrades; fundamentals of operating systems and upgrades; information about printers, scanners and other peripheral devices; networking basics; troubleshooting simple issues and resolving them. None of these topics are necessarily tied to any particular vendor, although most PCs and laptops do use Microsoft Windows and so this is discussed at length. The aim of the course is to give participants confidence in working with PCs, laptops and peripherals from almost any manufacturer and be able to work on troubleshooting problems that arise in normal usage.

You can see from this discussion that CompTIA has gone out of its way to ensure that this qualification is vendor neutral. According to the CompTIA website, CompTIA A+ is held by over 900,000 IT professionals, so many individuals and organisations agree with that assertion.

When you examine other certifications, you will see the same story. With CompTIA Server +, for example, Dell, HP, IBM, Intel, and Xerox recommend or require it for their server technicians. It covers "foundation level" skills in server hardware and software, storage, best practices in an IT environment, disaster recovery and general network server troubleshooting. Servers can run any of a number of operating systems, so the training course covers several including Windows Server and Linux/Unix.

So, CompTIA certifications are vendor neutral and are a major way of assessing foundation skills in different areas of the IT industry.

CompTIA A+ certification is considered as the starting point for a career in IT industry. This certification validates individual's skills for today's competitive market. Logitrain is CompTIA Authorized Partner for certification training in Melbourne, Sydney and other major cities of Australia.
