Twitch streamer Amouranth has announced that the platform has indefinitely suspended advertising on her channel without any warning, effectively eliminating her ad revenue, possibly permanently.
Fans may have heard of Amouranth after she passed up Pokimane as the most popular female Twitch streamer thanks to her many hot tub streams. Because of this, some might credit Amouranth for heading the hot tub meta, though many other streamers such as Kiaraakitty have hosted them and been punished. In just the first 3 months of 2021, Amouranth was banned 3 times, and all due to displaying NSFW content on her channel, Twitch informed her. While users have been calling for Twitch to take a stand on the ongoing hot tub controversy, Twitch has instead reportedly taken a subtle, sneakier route that content creators were not expecting, according to Amouranth.
Via Twitter, Amouranth revealed that she recently had advertising revenue pulled out from under her without warning. While it's unclear whether or not ads are completely gone from her channel, Twitch has deemed the cosplayer's content not "advertiser-friendly" and she will no longer receive a cut of the profits from ads on the platform, despite being a Twitch Partner. If this is true, it's concerning that Twitch might be tackling the hot tub streamers in this quiet, non-transparent way. Rather than explaining whether or not suggestive content should be allowed on Twitch, the platform is instead removing the incentive to do them.
Amouranth goes on to criticize Twitch as a platform in the same way many other content creators including Pokimane have. She accuses Twitch's guidelines of being too ambiguous, both in regards to sexually explicit content as well as what's considered not "advertiser-friendly."
While people may have split opinions on the hot tub meta and other possibly suggestive content on Twitch, it's important to keep in mind that people like Amouranth make their income based on these streams. Additionally, Amouranth does not exclusively host hot tub streams, though suggestive content is a big part of her brand, she also made it big by cosplaying as video game and other pop culture characters such as Overwatch's Tracer. Amouranth is also using her income to open an animal shelter, she said live.
However, during an ongoing hot tub livestream, Amouranth said that she's not overly worried about losing the monetization on her own Twitch channel as she has other avenues of gaining revenue including sponsorships. The hot tub streamer is more concerned about other hot tub streamers and adjacent content creators as a whole, and how they will be affected by this new tactic by Twitch. She also believes Twitch should properly inform its creators before taking this type of action.
There are plenty of Twitch streamers one can follow or subscribe to on the service, with some being known for their controversies, while others are known for their personality or what they stream. Others are known for breaking Twitch records like Seansstream for the most hours streamed in 30 days. While the majority of streamers are video game-focused, there are others like Amouranth. She is known for her cosplay, Just Chatting streamers, and her workouts.
