Rocket League Could Be Coming to PlayStation 5

Rocket League is perhaps one of the most successful modern indie games, with developer Psyonix seeing massive success on the various platforms the title has come to. In September of 2020, Rocket League managed to hit one million concurrent players shortly after the game made the switch to go free-to-play.

Now, it seems that Psyonix and Epic Games may have plans to expand the game even further. Thanks to leaked documents that surfaced during the Apple v. Epic Games lawsuit, it seems that a next-generation client is in the works that could have Rocket League run natively on consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

The leaked document in question labels this next-generation client under a sort-of "What's Next?" section of Epic Games plans for the vehicular soccer game. Specifically, the document reads that the company is planning a next-generation client "with full game experience across all platforms, including mobile." While Psyonix has announced a Rocket League mobile title already, being the Rocket League Sideswipe game that debuted through alpha gameplay footage, it could be that Epic Games might also have plans to form a dedicated Rocket League mobile title.

Additionally, it seems that Epic Games also plans to have this mobile version feature cross-play and cross-progression between all platforms while still in alpha and beta phases. It's interesting, due in part to other mobile adaptations like Apex Legends not featuring cross-play with consoles presumably due to lack of precision controls. While nothing has been officially announced, these documents make it clear that Epic Games still has big plans in store for Rocket League. In a similar vein, this next-generation client could spell big news for PS5 and Xbox Series X owners.

While Rocket League is playable through backward compatibility on PS5, the game is only able to run at 60 FPS. However, Psyonix has stated that the team is planning an update that will allow Rocket League to run at 120 FPS on Xbox Series X. This is because doing so on Xbox's newest hardware would only require a minor patch, as opposed to Sony's newest hardware. However, this next-generation client could provide both consoles the extra boost they need to run Rocket League better than ever before, especially on PS5.

Of course, 4K checkerboard resolution and 60 FPS is nothing to scoff at on PS5, but the PS5 is undoubtedly powerful enough to run the game more smoothly. However, players will just have to wait and see how Psyonix and Epic Games' plans for Rocket League shake out in the future. Interested fans should also keep their eyes on the Apple v. Epic Games case that's currently ongoing, as more news surrounding both companies' games could still come out.

It's nearly been a year since Fortnite was removed from the Apple Games store. Apple didn't take kindly to Epic Games going around its platform for payments, thus bypassing the 30 percent commission off each purchase. In response to Epic Games, Apple removed the game from its mobile platform and has since cost Epic Games a pretty penny in lost revenue. Epic Games, in turn, was not happy about the store's practice, so it brought the current case against Apple claiming that it has a monopoly over its own gaming market. Epic states that Apple doesn't have competition in gaming; it hosts it.
