With PGA TOUR 2K21, 2K has a brand new golfing simulator on its hand and HB Studios has evolved from its own golfing series; The Golf Club. And now, according to a recent earnings call, it turns out that PGA TOUR 2K21 is off to a big start in terms of sales, indicating that the franchise may be here to stay.
With 2K swooping up HB Studios to design PGA TOUR 2K, it became clear that 2K was hoping to replicate the success of NBA 2K with PGA 2K. While golf may not have quite the same appeal as basketball in the world of video games, there has been a void in the simulator department of golf games for a while, and the PGA TOUR 2K games had the opportunity to step in. Apparently, the game did just that.
The well-reviewed PGA TOUR 2K21 is now a well-performing game as well in terms of sales. The CEO of Take-Two, Strauss Zelnick, recently reported that the game has sold around 2 million units. This result is something that the team is very proud of, and Take-Two believes that the game will only continue to sell. Additionally, with how well PGA TOUR 2K21 has done, it makes it more clear that it will not simply be a one-off and that PGA TOUR 2K will likely be a franchise moving forward.
The success of PGA TOUR 2K21 is a good thing for golf fans. In fact, when Game Rant sat down with HB Studios' developer Shaun West in an interview, he talked about how the team-up with 2K would likely help the long-term growth of the golfing sim. The players have come out in droves to enjoy the game so far, and that means that the series is likely set up to continue moving forward.
Toonami has had a large thumbprint in American late-night television over the years. It has mainly focused on broadcasting Japanese anime, but recently it has dipped its toe into video games, reviewing games like Ghosts of Tsushima. And while that particular title seems to fit the general theme of the television programming channel quite well, a recent review of PGA TOUR 2K21 shows that Toonami is continuing to branch out.
The brand new golfing simulator has received decent reception, with Game Rant giving PGA TOUR 2K21 a 7/10. Toonami isn't far off with its thoughts on the golfing game developed by HB Studios, as it gave the game an 8/10.
The intriguing part about the Toonami reviews is that they happen within the construct of the channel itself. Toonami is narrated by the wisecracking TOM, from his spaceship alongside A.I. SARA. And the video game reviews are handled by this same duo. So when talking about PGA TOUR 2K21, SARA is placing bets on whether or not TOM will slice his shot, and TOM is trying to pinpoint his approach shots for one-putt finishes (but failing to do so).
When it comes to the review timing, the video was posted only a couple of days ago, and the full game was released in August. So the review may be with some of the recent updates for PGA TOUR 2K21. The game launched as a full-fledged experience, but there is a lot still planned in terms of post-launch content.
