Overwatch Fan Reveals Impressive Star Wars Crossover Art With Genji

As is the case with most May The Fourth celebrations, every franchise is likely to get overwhelmed with Star Wars tributes — and Overwatch is no different. While Blizzard may not have added any official Star Wars skins to Overwatch, one fan’s concept for a Force-fueled version of Genji makes for quite the sight.

The art comes courtesy of Evanyla, and it sees the cyborg ninja becoming a Sith Lord. While the current version of Genji may not have taken such a path, the one seen in the Blackwatch Archives mission certainly could have considered joining the dark side. With skilled Genji players already incredibly dangerous as is, a version of the hero with force powers would be truly formidable. Evanyla’s version of Genji sees the hero positioned against a dark background, allowing those viewing the art to focus on the Star Wars-inspired costume design.
The skin sees Genji sporting a proper cape, allowing him to instantly fit in with the likes of Darth Vader and and Count Dooku. This redesign of Genji also sees him sporting red accents across his suit, recoloring the areas where green light bars would usually be seen. This carries across to Genji’s visor, as the younger Shimada brother looks more intimidating than he usually does thanks to the red light on his helmet. However, the star of the show is undoubtedly the redesign of Genji’s Dragonblade.
Given that the piece is so heavily inspired by Star Wars, it makes sense that the weapon used for Genji's ultimate be a lightsaber as opposed to a more traditional blade. Matching the red seen on his suit, Genji’s awesome lightsaber shares the color of those wielded by a majority of other Sith characters. It also boasts a traditional lightsaber hilt. Evanyla’s eye for detail shows clearly on Genji’s helmet and left side, as this red lightsaber can be seen reflecting light onto this portion of the armor.

A final touch sees Genji’s hand raised and open, clearly meant to mimic the character using the force to get an edge in combat. The comments of the post were entertaining as well, with some great lines like IronGladiator22’s “Luke, I need healing” seen in response to the art. Zealousideal-Ad4432 writes “the force becomes me,” a clever play on Genji’s “the dragon becomes me” voice line. However, the best comment so far is undoubtedly Silver_Scarlet’s “I find your lack of faith disturbing, Hanzo.” While Genji’s brother may join Overwatch in the sequel, playing off their old rivalry like this is still plenty of fun.
Once again showing the creativity of the game’s community when it comes to Overwatch skin concepts, Sith Genji is a terrific surprise. The crossover comes at a perfect time as well, serving to make this year’s Star Wars Day especially memorable for the Overwatch fan base.
