The Importance of a Phlebotomy Certification

Louisiana and California are the only states in the US where Phlebotomy certification is necessary. Phlebotomists should consider becoming certified as there are many benefits associated with certification in this wide field.

One of the benefits of certification is that it creates a sense of trust in the patient on whom venipuncture is being performed. Certification is also one of the best ways to avoid lawsuits in the healthcare system therefore, employers look for certified professionals to work for them. Phlebotomists who are not certified by any organization will be disadvantaged when a lawsuit is launched against them. Certification is also considered an added advantage when seeking employment and employers usually overlook those who don't have certification in favor of those who are recognized and certified by a national organization. Of the ten organizations that certify professionals in this field, the top three are: the Association of Phlebotomy technicians, American Society of Clinical Pathologists and the National Phlebotomy Association. Most of these societies require candidates to work under supervision of a qualified phlebotomist in a healthcare facility. Candidates are also required to successfully collect a specified number of blood samples. In order to pass the certification program, candidates must pass a written examination.

Although most phlebotomy careers are in the healthcare industry, qualified phlebotomists can also work in hospitals, blood banks, medical laboratories, and nursing homes. Certified Phlebotomists can earn up to $52,000 annually while individuals who are not certified can only make between $20000 and $30000. Jobs in this industry are always available therefore, phlebotomists always have job security.

There are many benefits of being certified by a national organization. With a little class work and supervision, annual income is set to increase substantially. Phlebotomy certification is an investment for the future and is well worth the effort and time invested to achieve it.
