As winter finally gives way to spring and you start looking for something to read, try Lou Reed. A book of poetry written by the late music artist has been published, and it will be made available in April.
Issued by Anthology Works the book, which is titled Do Angels Need Haircuts?, will contain verse written in the late Sixties and early Seventies when Reed was a member of the Velvet Underground. All but two of the poems have never before been published, and many of them are available on a CD being recited by Reed himself.
Long time fans of Lou Reed will certainly appreciate the new volume, but few will be surprised by the fact that the singer wrote poetry. All one needs to do is take a glimpse into his discography to find snippets of exquisite poetry in the lyrics of his many songs, such as the hit "Walk On the Wild Side" or the ephemeral "Perfect Day."
Here are eight songs that serve as fine examples of poetry in Lou Reed lyrics.
Andy's Chest from Transformers
If I could be any one of the things on this world that bite, instead of a blind ocelet on a leash I'd rather be a kite
Goodnight Ladies from Transformer
Now, if I was an actor or a dancer who is glamorous then, you know, amorous life would soon be mine. But now the tinsel light of star break is all that's left to applaud my heart break, and eleven o'clock I watch the network news
Men of Good Fortune from Sally Can't Dance
Men of good fortune often cause empires to fall, While men of poor beginnings often can't do anything at all
N.Y. Stars from Sally Can't Dance
The stock is empty in our eyeball store, All we got left a few cataracts and sores
A Gift from Coney Island Baby
Responsibility sits so hard on my shoulder from like a good wine, I'm better as I grow older
How Do You Speak To An Angel? from Growing Up In Public
A son who is cursed with a harridan mother or a weak simpering father at best, is raised to play out the timeless classical motives of filial love and incest
Title Track from Growing Up In Public
Up from a dream of nightmarish proportions down to a size neither regal nor calm, A Prince Hamlet caught the middle between reason and instinct, Caught in the middle with your pants down again
Women from The Blue Mask
A woman's love can lift you up, and women can inspire, I feel like buying flowers and hiring a celestial choir, A choir of castratis to serenade my love, they'd sing a little Bach for us and then we'd make love
