A legal DNA testing is required when the results of the test will be used in the court of law for legal purposes. Some of the uses of a test that is conducted for legal purposes include child custody and/or support. Legal testing results are also used in visa and immigration applications for people who want to authenticate their citizenship. In other areas such as inheritance and estate settlements, legal testing has also been greatly used.

Once the test samples reach the testing laboratory, the procedures for carrying out the legal test does not differ from normal home DNA paternity test. The only difference between a legal test and a non-legal test is the steps through which the test samples are collected. The court ordered legal test is normally overseen by a third party that has been appointed by the legal system. This of course is for obvious reasons. The ruling of the court is going to be very much dependent on the results of the test. Henceforth it becomes crucial that samples are collected under the established procedures that satisfies the legal system.

It is the third party that actually collects the DNA sample from the participants. When the time for the collection of the DNA sample has arrived, the participants would have to make an appointment with the third party collector. At the time of collection of the samples, legal government identification documents such as passports are required to ensure that the samples are from the right people. The third party must establish that they have actually witnessed the collection of the clients' DNA samples.

They therefore ensure that the samples are notarized and sent to the testing laboratory. In some instances, current photographs of the participants are taken. They will later be presented at the court of law to verify or confirm that those are the people who gave the samples for testing. Because these are the standards that are followed, the results are admissible in almost every court of law in this country.

As a result of the afore-mentioned steps that has to be taken to get a DNA test for legal purposes, it is not cheap. The cost of the test itself is within the same range as any normal paternity or genealogy test. However, the addition of the court-ordered third party supervision always would shoot up the cost of the entire test. This makes the legal testing more costly compared to the ordinary tests. Most medical insurance companies do not cover DNA testing costs unless of course it is originally covered in the terms of the insurance agreement. It therefore would be your responsibility to cover the payment.

Results are usually ready within 3-5 working days. A sample of the test will be sent to the participants if they requested it and also to the law court's representatives.
