Nail tech school curriculum is dictated by your State Board of Cosmetology. Some of the things you will learn in nail school are:

Basic Sanitation - You will learn how to sanitize and disinfect your implements and station to keep everything clean for your clients. This stops the spread of infectious diseases and helps prevent fungus and bacterial infections of the nails, skin, and feet.

Basic Manicuring and Pedicuring - This includes the step-by-step instruction of taking care of the hands and feet. You will learn how to clean up the nail bed, cuticles, skin, and basic massage techniques. Nail polishing techniques are also included.

Nail Enhancements - This includes application and removal of nail enhancements like acrylics, gel nails, fiberglass, silk wraps and more. You will be taught basic nail preparation and application techniques such as applying tips and sculpting forms. Nail filing and proper enhancement removal are included as well.

Client Assessment - This will include learning how to spot nail and skin disorders and diseases. You will learn how to examine a client's hands and feet and spot potential problems with their nails or skin, as well as how to determine what type of nail care is recommended for them.

Basic Business Skills - You will learn how to deal with clients and coworkers, how to find a job, as well as how to market yourself so that you can build a clientele.

While you will learn all of this and more in a nail technician licensing program, most programs are geared towards helping you pass the State Board exam. Whatever is required by your State Board of Cosmetology will be taught by the school. You will practice taking the hands-on nail tech exam, as well as the written exam. Some schools will have practice exam drills on a regular basis to help you get used to performing manicuring services under pressure.

Going to nail school will help you get a good foundation of the basics of nail care. If you want to learn advanced nail care, many professional nail product companies offer advanced classes that will help you move beyond the basics you learned in school.
