In order to get certified, one has to apply for a course that teaches him/her necessary skills, and passing of a certification examination. CNA certification exam consists of two parts, the first one is a written exam that covers the responsibilities and skills of a CNA, and another one is the performance exam that tests the skills of the candidate.

After having successfully passed the examination, the state medical board issues a certificate as a nursing assistant to the candidate, which is valid in that particular state.
Also, the certification is to be renewed after 24 months which can be done only if the nursing assistant has practiced for at least eight hours in his/her state. CNA Certification Renewal allows a nurse aide to work continuously even after 2 years.
