In order to get certified, one has to apply for a course that teaches him/her necessary skills, and passing of a certification examination. CNA certification exam consists of two parts, the first one is a written exam that covers the responsibilities and skills of a CNA, and another one is the performance exam that tests the skills of the candidate.

The written exam consists of the questions about the best way to fulfill certain tasks, and also, questions about ethics that can restrict an aide to perform illegal practices and to engage in legal processes only.

After the written exam, the candidate has to undergo the performance exam. There are 25 specific skills required by a certified nursing assistant to be proficient in, and the performance exam will cover not less than 5 skills. Most of them include washing of hands before and after the patient contact, taking and recording measurements such as blood pressure, pulse rate, temperature, etc, dressing a patient with consideration of his dignity, and many more to monitor the performance of the candidate.

The candidates who fail in either of the exams have to reappear for the failed option, normally up to three times and even after that a candidate is not able to clear the exam, he/she has to complete the course and training once again. After having successfully passed the examination, the state medical board issues a certificate as a nursing assistant to the candidate, which is valid in that particular state.

Also, the certification is to be renewed after 24 months which can be done only if the nursing assistant has practiced for at least eight hours in his/her state. CNA Certification Renewal allows a nurse aide to work continuously even after 2 years.
