Microsoft Outlook 2003 is the successor of Microsoft Outlook 2002 and 2000 versions. Though Microsoft Outlook 2003 is a great version, it may give you troubles, also known as Microsoft Outlook problems, at times. You can easily get rid of these problems using the tweaks mentioned in this free Microsoft Outlook support guide.

Instructions:

Open Microsoft Outlook. Click the Help tab and select Detect and Repair from the drop-down options. Click to check the box beside Restore my shortcuts while repairing and then click the Start button. This will automatically detect, repair, and restore your Outlook shortcuts when the process finishes. Wait for the process to finish. When done, close Outlook and reopen it. If the problem persists, move on to the next step.

Click the Start button and navigate to Control Panel. When in Control Panel, look for Add or Remove Programs and double-click it. Look for Microsoft Outlook 2003 and click the Change/Remove button beside it. You will see the Microsoft Office 2003 Setup window. Click the Reinstall or Repair button and then hit the Next button. Click to check the Detect and Repair errors in my Office installation box and then hit Install. Also check the box beside Restore my Start Menu shortcuts to restore and then hit the Install button. Wait until the repair tool automatically detects Microsoft Outlook problems and fixes them.

If it is the damaged Outlook PST (personal folder) file that you want to fix, use the Scanpst.exe tool. The Scanpst.exe file, by default resides in the C: drive> Program Files> Common Files> System> MSMAPI> 1033. If it is not there, look in to C: drive> Program Files> Common Files> System> Mapi> 1033. If you have a newer Outlook 2003 version on your computer, look in to C: drive> Program Files> Microsoft Office> Office12. You will see the SCANPST icon. Double-click SCANPST. When in the Inbox Repair Tool dialog box, either type the PST file name or click the Browse button to find it.

The default location of the PST file can be C: drive> Documents and Settings> Username> Local Settings> Application Data> Microsoft> Outlook. Select the PST file. Also check the box beside Make backup of scanned file before repairing and then hit the Repair button. The tool will now scan for damages and repair them. When done, click the OK button to exit the Inbox Repair Tool dialog box. In case the tool returns this error message 'Fatal Error: 80040900', it indicates that your PST file has become over sized. You will need to reduce the size of your PST file to make Outlook working again. To reduce the PST file size, create several small PST files and divide the entire Outlook data into them. It will reduce the main PST file's size and help Outlook function properly.

Open your antivirus program and launch a full virus scan. Once the scan finishes, prompt the program to remove any infected file brought in the scan results. A virus or malware infection may cause Microsoft Outlook to stop working, show error messages randomly, or work slowly. Besides, update your antivirus software regularly to help it scan all the incoming-outgoing emails in real-time. It will help block the virus or malware infections that slip into your Outlook via emails.

Additional Tips:

Always download and install Microsoft Office updates for the enhanced performance and functionality of Microsoft Outlook 2003 and other Office components. Use the Windows Update utility to look for the latest updates, patches, and tweaks etc. In case you are unable to fix your Microsoft Outlook problems, contact Microsoft Outlook support or Microsoft technical support.
