Are You Kettlebell Material?

So one of the questions I get from people on a fairly regular basis is if they are kettlebell material. The fact is that if you are wanting to know whether or not you are kettlebell material then you have to assess what kind of person you are. I have included some common questions you may want to consider asking yourself before you consider working out with kettlebells, or working out with any level of seriousness to begin with.

1. So are you serious about fitness, strength, and your health? -This is a great point I bring up with several people. If you aren't serious about working out and just want to look good in the gym wearing your ipod and talking on the cell phone to either your girlfriend or boyfriend then forget about kettlebell training my friend. Go take up knitting or stick to watching lame reality TV such as The Biggest Loser, because you aren't going to be part of the kettlebell culture.

2. Can you be diligent about practicing and consistently work to get better at new tasks? -This is a big part of being involved in my kettlebell culture. If you can't devote yourself to practicing on your own time and truly applying the technique of even the most basic lifts then you are not going to make it with kettlebell training. As a strength and conditioning professional I can show you how it's done, but I can't enter your body and magically help you to execute the lift properly. At the point of observation it is up to you "to get it," and "to get better at it."

3. Do you get easily discouraged or distracted? - I can tell you right now that if you are going to whine about or give up on trying something that is somewhat challenging at first then you aren't going to be kettlebell material. Anything in life that is "worth it's weight in gold" is going to be challenging, at least more so at first! Kettlebell training can present new challenges up front. This type of training requires a true "mind-body connection" and this takes focus and persistence. If you are going to allow other things to distract you or throw your hands up in frustration then you will never be part of this kettlebell culture.

If you are starting a kettlebell program or thinking about starting one then you need to ask yourself these questions. Take the time to endure the learning curve and you won't be disappointed. If you want to learn more then feel free to access the rest of my articles on the subject. Remember that most anyone can train hard, but only the best train smart.
