Ubisoft's Watch Dogs Legion received more substantial content this month, and the game only promises to get bigger from here. Online multiplayer for Watch Dogs Legion on PC released March 18 following its availability on consoles March 9, and today its first Tactical Op mission series launched across all platforms. Those who put off the game because of its delayed multiplayer features can try it out for free this coming weekend.

Now seems as good a time as ever to give Ubisoft's latest Watch Dogs title a spin, as a planned content roadmap through summer 2021 was also unveiled today. Included in this upcoming content is a crossover between Watch Dogs Legion and Assassin's Creed via a World Event available to all players in August. However, there will also be content exclusively available to Season Pass holders, including four new playable heroes, a story expansion, and more.

Before all of that arrives, interested players can access the Watch Dogs Legion free trial weekend between March 25 and 29 on PC (via Epic Games Store and Ubisoft Connect), PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. It will include access to the story campaign up to its Skye Larsen mission, Online Mode content, and four of London's eight boroughs, with all progression carrying over to the full game according to Ubisoft. Pre-downloads will be available starting March 24 on PC (at 10:00 a.m. PT) and PlayStation (at 9:00 a.m. PT), but Xbox users must wait until launch.

Ubisoft has also confirmed that Watch Dogs Legion will receive cross-play and cross-generation support in the future, so those who like what they see during the free trial weekend may want to consider buying it for the chance to play with more friends down the line. There are a number of different sales planned across versions to coincide with this weekend according to an Ubisoft press release:

Those who do not wish to buy the game even at a discount may still be in luck, as earlier this month it was rumored that Watch Dogs Legion could come to Xbox Game Pass in the near future. Given the service has added a number of games from Bethesda Softworks and EA Play in recent weeks, it may not be a huge surprise to see Ubisoft offer titles from its catalog as well.

Watch Dogs Legion's online multiplayer mode will release in just a few weeks, on March 9. Although it's a big deal for Watch Dogs Legion's immediate future, Ubisoft's long term goals for the game mode are a bit of a mystery. This seems like something that Ubisoft could either add to only modestly or expand constantly with huge regular updates. The latter seems like the more profitable avenue, so it may just be what Ubisoft settles on. Watch Dogs Legion isn't the only free-roam game whose multiplayer component vastly changes the game, though. Grand Theft Auto 5 is a good example of how adding online multiplayer totally changes the way the game is played.

There's a lot of similarities already in place between Watch Dogs Legion Online and Grand Theft Auto Online. For instance, both of them are sort of parallel to the story-driven single-player, and they also give players a lot of liberty to explore the game's setting. Players also band together to complete missions around the overworld and complete rewards. Some missions are just for fun and profit, while others have narrative elements. Watch Dogs Legion Online might be able to make great use out of long-term support from Ubisoft the same way that Grand Theft Auto Online has benefitted from Rockstar's devotion.
