Arguably one of the best open-world games created by Bethesda, Skyrim has continued to entice players to stay in-game, even without any official updates. With the title reaching its 10th year this 2021, the Skyrim modding community seems to be more active than ever. Just recently, a fan produced and shared an expansive mod that allows players a variety of character editing options, which they can implement even from the get-go.

Fans will likely agree that the biggest reason the game has stayed at the top of the to-play list is because of the Skyrim content creator community. Not only do fans film videos that share their incredible in-game adventures but modders also let their imaginations and skills go wild by creating programs that provide additional story content, and even beautify a ten-year old video game.

On NexusMods, user phenderix created and recently uploaded a Skyrim mod that he called Project Proteus. In the description, phenderix shares that the mod will change the way players will experience Skyrim. This includes giving fans the option to switch between characters in the same Skyrim world, something that is not possible in an unmodded base game, and also allow their created characters to be spawned as followers.

The mod will also let players permanently tweak the appearance of some of the NPCs in Skyrim. Not only that, they can also change NPC stats, which will make them more useful and hardy when it comes to battle. Fans will likely agree that base game NPCs have a tendency to charge into battle and die easily due to their lack of good equipment or battle proficiency. Being able to make NPCs stronger, and easier on the eyes, is something that most Skyrim fans will likely appreciate.

The Project Proteus mod also comes with different sets of editors for Skyrim weapons, armor, spells, and even the weather. Players will be able to change weapon, armor, and spell attributes such as damage, duration, etc., and even permanently implement these changes in their saved games. Custom enchantments can be applied for weapons and armor, while spells can be learned and unlearned by the player's chosen character. The weather editor also provides the option to change between 23 different weather types in-game.

Overall, phenderix's Project Proteus mod looks like an exciting mod that Skyrim players will likely enjoy to play around with. Though it does require a number of other mods to make the whole system work, at least players will be given easy access to editing options, without having to open up the game's built-in console command system.

There are plenty of open-world RPGs out there, covering just about any setting, from sci-fi, to historical fantasy, to high fantasy. These open worlds can vary in quality as all games can, but few have ever reached the status of Skyrim.

A ton of games have tried to replicate the open-world magic of Skyrim, but none have managed to quite hit the mark. That's not to say there haven't been other great open-world games released since then, The Witcher 3 is a fantastic example of another open-world RPG that's a cut above the rest, but that and the world of Skyrim still feel quite different.
