Pokemon Infographic Breaks Down Kanto Population
Perhaps because it was the first, the Kanto region from Pokemon Red and Blue holds a special place in players' hearts. A Pokemon fan has now explored the beloved Pokemon region and compiled an interesting infographic breaking down the population by gender, area and more.
The infographic reveals that there are 697 people in Kanto in Pokemon Red and Blue and that the population is predominantly made up of males. As players may have already guessed, the majority (54 percent) of Kanto's inhabitants are Pokemon trainers. The rest of its citizens work in shops, Pokemon Centers, and are part of the game's story, like the player's mother. The region is also made up mostly of "mature adults," which debunks a popular fan theory that has piqued fans' imaginations for many years.
The infographic, which was put together by Redditor L285, goes into more detail, explaining their findings on the Pokemon subreddit. One interesting note is that there are 24 male trainer "classes" (based on their in-game sprites) and only five female classes, aside from significant characters like gym leaders. Characters such as Professor Oak and the villainous Giovanni appear in multiple areas of the game, but were only counted once. L285 even went so far as to count every time an NPC sprite appears in the game, and if they appear in a city, land route, large building, boat, cave, sea route, safari zone or forest, with the vast majority appearing in Kanto's various cities.
One Redditor commented that the fact that there are so many adult males in the game disproves the "Kanto War" theory, which posits that most of the region's adults died in a great war, leaving children to become Pokemon trainers. While there are many darker themes and stories to be found throughout the Pokemon universe, (Mewtwo's creation comes to mind), it would seem that there are still plenty of adults alive and well in Kanto and ready to challenge its young protagonist.
This is an incredibly impressive piece of work by a fan, and shows the enduring appeal and popularity of that first Pokemon game. Nintendo and Game Freak have returned to Kanto multiple times, including in Pokemon Yellow, Pokemon: Let's Go Pikachu! and Pokemon: Let's Go Eevee! and as an endgame surprise in Pokemon Gold and Silver. Perhaps because it was a simpler time and Pokemon was a new franchise, the world of Kanto felt filled with mysteries, rumors and excitement.
New Pokemon Snap is one of the big spring games to come out for the Nintendo Switch, drawing in old-school fans that played the original Nintendo 64 version back in the day. New Pokemon Snap seems to be a modernized version of that title, bringing in many more new Pokemon to the world, and giving players more types of regions to explore.
Today is a big day for excited fans, however, as the game's review embargo has just been lifted, giving people a chance to see critics' opinions on New Pokemon Snap. Is the game just as good as the original, or are there some new features that are lacking? Fans will be happy to know that the Switch game is currently sitting at a Metacritic score of 80, so it seems that most critics would agree that New Pokemon Snap is a great game overall.
