There are a lot of MMORPGs on the market these days and each new series that pops up strives to make the experience more immersive for players. The next logical step is taking the genre into virtual reality with the VRMMORPG, and the upcoming title by Ramen VR, Zenith, hopes to be a pioneer in that field. Today it was announced that this ambitious project will be coming to PlayStation VR.

By all accounts, MMOs and VR should be a perfect pairing, but it's a combo that is still in its infancy. Zenith is bringing together not only MMORPGs and VR, but anime as well to build a satisfying, engaging experience. From what has been shown of the title, it looks like a vibrant open-world that players will want to explore close up. The PlayStation Blog posted an in-depth preview of the game's development, including photos, videos, and explanations of things like exploration, socialization, and combat.

Being an open world, players can explore every nook and cranny with the ability to climb anything, limited by stamina, and via a Gliding system. The MMO Genshin Impact was compared to Breath of the Wild regularly for the adoption of these popular mechanics. Zenith may face critics for this choice as well, but it is a small part of what the game has to offer. The game's first-person combat will be a unique draw, where victory is less stat-based and more tactical. Players will have to attack, block, and dodge in real-time using their own two hands.

Developer Ramen VR is deeply passionate about MMORPGs and JRPGs, so this relatively untrodden genre is in good hands. In addition to PlayStation VR, Zenith will also be available on SteamVR and Oculus, with a planned release date for sometime in 2021. A pre-order start date and closed alpha month will be revealed on March 4, 2021. Those interested can sign up on the game's official website.

In other MMO news, the Final Fantasy 14 PS5 open beta release date was recently announced for April. This move to a next-gen console will have several advantages, such as a high-resolution GUI, 4K capability, and faster load times, which is a major plus for players. Once the open beta starts, players can sign up to test the waters and aid in the final stages of development. Square Enix also released a short trailer showing the MMO running on the PS5.

The open beta release date was just one part of the Announcement Showcase that took place in early February. The biggest news from the event was the reveal of Final Fantasy 14's next expansion, Endwalker. This will be the MMO's fourth expansion and its story will conclude the game's current story arc. It will also come with tons of new content, gameplay changes, and two new jobs.

The Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game genre epitomizes what gaming is all about — escaping reality to live vicariously through a character in a fictional world. MMORPG games offer players the chance to customize a character, letting them become whoever they chose as they traverse a world set in the past, the future, alternative realities, or fantasy universes. Unlike most games, MMORPGs aren't just solely filled with AI and NPCs, but real people who can often be spoken to, traded with, or even fought.
