Mortal Kombat Rock Cover Features Gilbert Gottfried
Mortal Kombat has been the talk of the town recently, with the classic video game series recently getting a film based on it. The movie has performed relatively well, not quite being an Oscar contender but generally satisfying viewers with the bloody combat they came to see. However, those not impressed by the movie might want to check out a metal cover of the original game's main theme.
Performed by Lame Genie, a video game cover band from Rhode Island, the cover's real twist – besides its heavy metal infusion, which works well with what the band is going for – is that it features Gilbert Gottfried, an iconic actor that has played hundreds of roles, especially in children's shows and movies. The actor is well-known for his unique voice, perhaps most notably as Iago in Disney's Aladdin.
Gottfried's high-pitched, scratchy voice performs the role of the announcer, the Mortal Kombat character that reads quips during matches. Throughout the song, Gottfried calls out some of the announcer's famous lines, reciting things like "Test your might," "Fight!," and "Mortal Kombat!" Gottfried might not be the first person gamers think of when considering who would fit well into the announcer role, but he certainly lends a unique flair to it.
The band hired Gottfried for the role on Cameo, a service that allows buyers to purchase special shout-out messages from celebrities. For example, those that would want to hire Gottfried for a shout-out can do so for $175, according to the actor's page on the site. There aren't many restrictions to what the celebrities can say, though it does have to fit within a 250 character limit.
Currently, the video is sitting at around 80,000 views and 2,700 likes, with comments flooding in supporting the character. Some have even gone so far as to say that this should get Gottfried a spot as a Mortal Kombat guest character. Of course, there are tons of fans that would like to see Gottfried duke it out with the likes of Sub-Zero, but it seems like an unfortunately impossible concept.
Hopefully, this will inspire other actors to give a shot at music covers, through Cameo or otherwise. Mortal Kombat has been a popular franchise for decades now, so it's no small wonder that players are so apt to make covers for the main theme. Maybe other iconic voice actors will start joining in on them, now that Gilbert Gottfried has done it.

The gameplay speaks for itself, and the story penned for the original spawned a comic series that's still one of DC's most popular. The Marvel vs. Capcom series was, for a long time, the premiere way for Marvel and fighting game fans to blend interests. Known for fast-paced combat and insane, screen-filling powers, the series became a fighting game staple. The series inception started way back with Street Fighter vs. X-Men, after Capcom had created the SNES-era Marvel video games. Back then, Marvel was nearly bankrupt and had little input on the games based on those licenses. Now Marvel stands as one of entertainment's juggernauts. Many fighting game fans consider MvC the golden series of crossover fighters, but this could be bad news for the rumored Marvel vs. Capcom 4.
