For Capcom, 2021 has been a year of promise for the veteran company in which the beginning of the year is proving to be as impressive as its success last year. With the release of Monster Hunter Rise and Resident Evil Village, Capcom has achieved back-to-back success in little over a month as all eyes are set towards Dragon's Dogma, another one of Capcom's franchises that have been the topic of discussion among its fans.

Dragon's Dogma was originally released in 2012 as a new action-adventure IP with many elements from Souls-related games and other mediums of the "high fantasy" genre. Upon its release, fans praised the game for its creativity and the number of customization options that players could adjust to their liking. The open-world aspect, both in the story as well as gameplay, was built upon in its updated release, Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen. Since 2013, the series has been dormant, with rumors and leaks hinting that a sequel may arrive sooner than later.

News on a potential sequel to Dragon's Dogma elevated from a potential "what-if" to highly probable as a massive ransomware attack on Capcom leaked plans of a Dragon's Dogma 2 back in November. Since the news became public knowledge, Capcom has yet to reveal any further details about a potential Dragon Dogma sequel, however, theories among fans may reveal more information about the potential game engine that the sequel may run on.

There's a high chance that the Dragon's Dogma sequel will run on the RE Engine, the same engine that Monster Hunter Rise and Resident Evil Village utilized, according to YouTuber AestheticGamer. As most Capcom games that aren't ports or remasters of older titles have historically used Capcom's proprietary game engine in the past, it is a safe assumption that Dragon's Dogma 2 would follow suit.

Initial signs pointing towards a potential sequel to Dragon's Dogma was the Netflix anime adaptation of the series, first announced last summer and released in September. The 7-episode animation was ultimately an abridged version of the original plot for Dragon's Dogma, yet the impending leak all but confirmed the presence of a sequel.

While Dragon's Dogma 2 has yet to be formally announced by Capcom or series director Hideaki Itsuno, Capcom will attend E3 this year, with many anticipating the official announcement of Dragon's Dogma 2. Itsuno had also expressed interest in reviving another fan-favorite series in Rival Schools, with fan demand reaching an all-time high following the announcement of Akira in Street Fighter 5.

Capcom's hugely underrated open-world action RPG Dragon's Dogma has been gone for a long time. The PS4 and Xbox One generation, however,  saw a successful turnaround for some of Capcom's most popular franchises, and while Dragon's Dogma wasn't one of them, there are plenty of reasons as to why Dragon's Dogma 2 should be that game for the PS5 and Xbox Series X generation.

Dragon's Dogma creator Hideaki Itsuno recently teased his next project after making a comeback with Devil May Cry 5 in 2019. Since then, Itsuno has also shown an interest in making a Dragon's Dogma 2, leading to many speculate that this next game is indeed the next entry in the Dragon's Dogma franchise.
