Invincible Needs a Mortal Kombat Style Fighting Game

Anyone that's been on the internet lately has likely heard of Amazon's hit new show Invincible. This intriguing series is an adaptation of the Invincible comic book run that began in 2003, and it serves as a deconstruction of the superhero genre as a whole. During the show, protagonist Mark and the viewer are both subjected to the harsh realities of life as a super hero, and this results in a surprisingly brutal experience. While many fans would love to see an Invincible video game adaptation, it's difficult to imagine how this might look. The best case scenario here would be a fighting game similar to the Mortal Kombat series.

For those that don't know, Invincible is shockingly gory at times, with characters dying in brutal ways left and right. This isn't the primary focus of the show, but it uses this realistic depiction of violence to further its own narrative. Likewise, Mortal Kombat is known for its deadly fatalities that leave nothing to the imagination. These tend to be a bit more gratuitous and are clearly a major draw of the game, but the similarities between the two in this regard can't be denied. Beware: minor spoilers for Invincible ahead.

One of the great things about Invincible as a fighting game is that there'd be no lack of characters to pick from. The show introduces tons of different heroes and villains in just eight episodes, and if more were needed the developers could easily dig into the comics to find them. In terms of heroes, players would obviously be able to play Invincible himself, but other playable characters could include Atom Eve, Rex Splode, The Immortal, and other members from either version of the Guardians of the Globe. Even Allen the Alien would be a fun inclusion for players.

While there are plenty of heroes in the show, there are just as many (if not more) super villains running around. Omni-Man is a must-have character, although given how powerful he is he might need to be handled similarly to Saitama from One Punch Man: A Hero Nobody Knows. Other villains include Titan, the Reanimen, the Mauler Twins, and Kursk. Fan favorite Battle Beast could also be included, although he is on a similar level to Omni-Man in terms of power. As stated, there are plenty of other characters that could be used as well to fill out an impressive roster.

Whether they'd be called fatalities or not, an Invincible fighting game would need to have brutal finishing moves. This is the primary inspiration it would take from Mortal Kombat, as the show never shies away from the gruesome aspects of trying to be a hero. It also doesn't seem as though most of the hero characters are against killing, as even members of the original Guardians of the Globe don't hesitate to kill enemies when it comes down to it.

Some characters already have moments in the show that could inspire these take downs. Just take a look at Omni-Man's killing spree at the end of the first episode or the way Battle Beast beats down Mark. There would be more creative freedom involved for other characters, and it would be up to the developers to create fatalities for each character that match their powers. Obviously players would need to suspend their disbelief, as this would inherently mean that situations could arise in which Mark is performing a fatality on Atom Eve or vice versa, but that sort of story dissonance never inhibited the Mortal Kombat franchise.
