Dying Light 2 is Quickly Becoming Dead Island 2

Dying Light 2, by all accounts, is continuing ahead with development, but it seems like it has been "coming soon" for quite a while. At the same time, Dead Island 2 is also still in the works and is still slated to arrive on the Xbox Series X and PS5. While these reminders pop up from time to time, it seems they're necessary because both games seem to be stuck in "development hell."

Dead Island 2 was first announced all the way back in 2014, but even more eye-popping is that the Dambuster and Deep Silver title is a sequel to a game that came out a full decade ago. Interestingly enough, the game was originally going to be developed by Techland, but the company decided to scrap the project and instead make an original zombie game. Not long after the dev made that decision, Dying Light was born.

After a rather long roller coaster ride involving Dead Island 2 that rivals the mixed emotions Elden Ring fans have suffered through, it makes sense that the general public isn't swayed by the messages of "all is well." That's not to say it isn't, but that many fans who have long waited for both games have entered into a "show me" state. A demo, a trailer, or something needs to really hit the web soon in order to convince people that either, or both games are still actually coming the consoles at some point.

That's not to say that any old trailer will do. Dead Island 2 did show another trailer a couple of years ago, but it seems the rationale behind it was that the developer wanted to make sure everyone knew the game was still coming. However, that was indeed, a couple of years ago now.

Dead Island 2, meanwhile, is quickly losing goodwill of its own. There's a reason these two games are being tied together. There's simply too much the pair have in common and not just because they're both about fighting zombies in a warm, tropical climate. Techland has, of course, said new info about its latest project is coming in 2021, which seems to be a good sign. The company is trying to keep its fans in the know, and there's dozens of reasons that it may not have yet.

To Techland's credit, some basic information like this is something at least. While fans can expect more information on Dying Light 2 this year, there's nothing to be said about Dead Island 2. At least in this race of information at a snail's pace, Dying Light 2 is doing more than disappearing into the background, yet one slip could seen one zombie game eat the other.

Dying Light 2 has been out of the limelight for quite some time. Developer Techland has been largely silent on its progress since an indefinite delay in 2020, but it looks like that silence may finally come to an end. Recently, Redditors found a Czech listing for the Dying Light 2 Collector’s Edition on the retailer Xzone shortly before it was taken down. It’s not hard to assume, then, that a release date is just around the corner — maybe.

The original game was well-received and had a real sense of challenge when attempting to navigate the world past dusk. Combine this base concept with Dying Light getting years of DLC that added extra single-player and multiplayer modes, and the resulting game is one of the PS4/Xbox One generation's sleeper hits.
