Publisher Activision has confirmed that a new Call of Duty title is in development to be released later this year. While a 2021 release for the annual series was largely expected, the announcement does confirm some of the rumors that have been circulating around the next Call of Duty game.

Call of Duty has been an annual series for many years now, with titles being developed in a rotation by the likes of Infinity Ward, Treyarch, and Sledgehammer Games. However, newer titles have the added challenge of having to integrate with the series' free-to-play battle royale Call of Duty: Warzone as well as being an entire entry in their own right.

Now, it has been confirmed that Call of Duty will continue its expected cycle by having 2021's entry in the series developed by Sledgehammer Games. The news comes thanks to Activision's financial earnings report from earlier today. While little else is known about the title, Activision stated that the new title would be a fully next-generation experience and will launch with a campaign, multiplayer mode, and co-op modes. There also was no mention if any of the numerous studios that assist on Call of Duty titles would be lending Sledgehammer a hand.

Sledgehammer Games did have a pretty amusing response to the news on Twitter, but little else is known about the game other than the studio's involvement. However, Sledgehammer Games leading the title does align with the rumors that have circulated about a Call of Duty WW2: Vanguard, as Call of Duty: WW2 was Sledgehammer Games' last entry in the series. Activision did say that fans could expect official news on the title soon, but it is odd that it has taken this long for any announcements, as Call of Duty titles have historically been revealed in April or May.

If a new Call of Duty title is coming this year still, it could be part of the coming Summer of Games industry conferences, such as E3 and Summer Game Fest. Of course, after the troubled integration of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War into Call of Duty: Warzone, it will be interesting to see if possibly introducing WW2 weapons and equipment into the battle royale can be done any more smoothly. It also will be fun to see what Call of Duty 2021 does with the series' new engine that started with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, so hopefully, fans will get more news on the coming title soon.

Battlefield 6 fans have been waiting patiently for official info, though with that not yet coming, gamers have been forced to rely on leaks. Fortunately, there has been no shortage of rumors regarding the highly anticipated sequel, ranging from details on the game’s destruction to odd features like a robot dog. With details on the reveal trailer leaked as well as some screenshots from the actual game, those hopeful about Battlefield 6 have been given plenty of info to ponder.

While fans should obviously be careful when it comes to believing Battlefield 6 rumors, they do seem to paint an interesting picture for the title. In particular, some leaks seem to suggest a bold new vision for the Battlefield brand. When put together, it looks as if there is a chance Battlefield 6 will skip out on the style of consistent releases that franchises like Call of Duty are known for. Instead, the next game might just be a proper platform for Battlefield fans, consistently updated for the entirety of the new console generation.
