Avatar: The Last Airbender New Funko Pops Revealed With Exclusive Figures
Avatar: The Last Airbender receives new Funko Pop figures, including several exclusives. The wave of new Avatar merch can be attributed to the surge of popularity the series received last year after it was added to Netflix. The Nickelodeon series has been off the air for over ten years, yet it remains one of the most beloved kids' shows of all time. Avatar was made available on Netflix in the first half of 2020 and drew in both old fans and new. As a result, Avatar became the streamer's biggest kids' show of the year.
Avatar follows the adventures of the titular last airbender, a 12-year-old boy named Aang who stands as his world's last hope for peace. As the Avatar, Aang must master all four elements and stop a hundred-year war created by the power-hungry Fire Nation. Avatar has long been praised for its creative world-building, well developed characters, and its ability to weave serious themes into a program meant for younger viewers. It led to the creation of a sequel series, Avatar: The Legend of Korra, in 2012.
On Wednesday, Funko announced the upcoming release of several new Avatar figures. They include several exclusives fans will only get to buy in certain locations. Of the regular releases, Avatar's new Funkos are Fire Lord Ozai, Suki, Admiral Zhao, Ty Lee, and a super-sized figure of Aang wielding all four elements (a glow in the dark version is available through Target). On the exclusive side, Amazon features a second Zhao figure that can glow in the dark, Hot Topic will sell a special Blue Spirit figure, BAM! has Mai, and two versions of Aang striking an action pose with his glider will be sold exclusively through Funko. Avatar's increased popularity has led to a boom in new merchandise for the series, as well as an uptick in upcoming content. Netflix is still developing a live-action series, while Nickelodeon has created its very own Avatar Studios. Announced back in February, Avatar Studios will produce original films and shows set within the world of The Last Airbender. The first project to enter development will be an animated movie. Plus, today, April 22, will see a new Avatar series debut on YouTube in honor of Earth Day.
