The Dota 2 mod turned official game known as Auto Chess will soon be arriving on PlayStation 5 completely free-to-play, but will also come with features specific to Sony's newest console.

Auto Chess first started as a Dota 2 mod inspired by a number of games like chess and Chinese Mahjong as well as video game genres such as MOBAs and tactical strategy games. In Auto Chess, players must strategically assign pieces onto the board as they would in chess, and the pieces then battle it out automatically after each opponent has their turn as they would in a strategy video game. But pulling from Dota 2, each chess piece has a different race and class with unique abilities. The popularity of the Dota 2 mod resulted in Auto Chess becoming its own standalone game.

Last fall, Auto Chess came to the PS4 and on March 30, it will be brought to the PS5 as well. Luckily, save data can be transferred from PS4 consoles to PS5s. But rather than being just a simple port, developer Drodo Studios has enhanced the game for the PS5's modernized technology. For example, Auto Chess will respond to the player's actions with the DualSense's haptic feedback. Graphics and load times have also been updated, and the PS5 version will feature cross-play with all other consoles supporting Auto Chess.

Also with the PS5 version of Auto Chess will be a PlayStation exclusive chess player known as Date Masamune. It's currently unclear if the warrior will be free or not, but he can be downloaded from the PlayStation Network after the game becomes available.

Since its release in 2013, DOTA 2 has endured as one of the most popular MOBA games out there. However, it is not exactly the easiest thing for new players to get into. MOBAs often operate on complex rules that can be hard for first-timers to get their heads around, and DOTA 2 is no exception.

Many feel the game is in dire need of a tutorial to get new players up to speed on DOTA 2. A group of fans decided that if Valve isn’t going to make one, they would have to do it themselves.

The DOTA 2 Community Tutorial Project is an ongoing attempt to add fan-made player training to the popular multiplayer battle arena. The beta version of the tutorial went live on Monday. The mod’s developers hope to have a final version ready before the anime adaptation arrives on Netflix on the 25th.

The Community Tutorial Project began based on the assumption that the Netflix series DOTA: Dragon’s Blood will bring an influx of new players to the game. The project hopes to ease the new players into the game with a comprehensive Tutorial on DOTA 2’s mechanics. The team raised over 29,000 dollars on IndieGoGo to make it a reality.

Of course, the fan-made tutorial still has two pretty significant hurdles to overcome. Like all custom games in DOTA 2, it will break the next time Valve rolls out a major update. Players will also still need to compete in 30 regular games before unlocking custom modes. That’s a big problem since it pretty much defeats the entire purpose of a tutorial.
